Reversed Glass Art

WHAT IS IT

Reverse glass painting is the art of painting an image on the reverse side of a piece of glass or glass object so that the image can be viewed from the unpainted side. It is a very exacting art form, especially when done as a realistic painting.  The image is actually painted in reverse order on the glass. For example, details, highlights and the artist’s signature that would go last on a canvass have to be painted in the reverse and first on the glass.

THE ESSENCE

It has been done since early in the sixteenth century in Europe, and was known in China during the early 18th century. It has also become an extremely popular art form in Contemporary Senegal, West Africa. In the last seventeen years J’Renee has experimented with the reverse glass painting technique. The process leaves very little margin of error, but the finished product is always a wonderful surprise.

NEW BLENDS

The finishing details of the painting must be put on the glass first, and must be done accurately as this is immediately covered with the next phase of the painting; what an artist would paint last on a traditional painting on canvas, would be put first on the glass. J’Renee has spent the last several years embellishing and perfecting this technique by adding collage and mixed media to the reverse glass process.

JRenee's Journey

"This process is an artistically, technically and mentally challenging medium."
